Due to various security concerns and risks, your Putnam Bank debit card is limited when you are traveling abroad, We apologize for this inconvenience.
Traveling with Your Debit Card
Please call us when you plan to travel, whether it is inside the United States or Internationally. Let us know the dates you are traveling and which cities you will be visiting. Also, please notify us if your travel plans change, whether leaving later or returning earlier. For added security, we now have a fraud protection program monitoring for suspicious or unusual transactions, i.e. transactions that are not normally associated with your card. Without notifying us, your card may be blocked for potential fraudulent use if our card processor, Elan, is unable to reach you to verify your transactions.
Please call any one of our branches or use our toll free number at 1-800-377-4424 Monday through Friday 8am – 5pm and speak to a customer service representative to notify us of your travel plans.
Blocked Debit Card Transactions for Certain Countries
Because of the prevalence of hacking, phishing and other security risks, your debit card cannot be used in these countries:
- North Korea
We do not have authorization to unblock these countries, so be sure to have another form of payment if you a traveling to any of these destinations.
“Card Not Present” International Transactions
To better protect our customers and the bank from increased fraudulent international online transactions, Putnam Bank will block all international transactions where the physical card is not presented to the merchant. These are known as "Card Not Present" transactions. For example, any purchase made online to a merchant located in a country outside of the United States, will not process when using your Putnam Bank debit card. Please use another form of payment. We apologize for any inconvenience, but feel the increased protection of our customers is necessary and important.
Deactivate/Activate Your Debit Card
You have the option to deactivate or activate your Putnam Bank debit card within your online banking profile. If you misplace your debit card simply login to your online banking profile and deactivate it. This will put a restriction on your card. If you later find your card, and have not yet ordered a new card, login to your online banking profile to reactivate your card. NOTE: Deactivating your card will not order a new card, and any transactions authorized before the deactivation will process.
